How to Download YouTube Shorts in 2026 (iPhone, Android, PC)

By DropZap Editorial TeamLast reviewed

YouTube Shorts hit a billion daily views, but the YouTube app itself has no Save button for them — only a Share menu. To actually save a Short as an MP4 you can replay offline, send to a friend, or re-edit, you need a third-party tool. This guide covers the full workflow on iPhone, Android, and PC using DropZap, plus the Shorts-specific quirks (vertical 9:16 aspect ratio, audio licensing, age-gated videos) that most guides skip.

Why YouTube doesn't let you save Shorts

YouTube's official app has a download feature, but it's limited in three ways that make it useless for most real use cases:

  • Saves are in-app only. "Downloaded" Shorts live inside the YouTube app's Downloads tab, not in your phone's Camera Roll or Gallery. You can't re-share them, edit them, or even play them without YouTube installed and logged in.
  • Premium required for most videos. Without YouTube Premium, the in-app download button is hidden for most Shorts.
  • Downloads expire. In-app saved Shorts expire after 30 days and require a re-connect to YouTube's servers to refresh.

A real MP4 that lives on your device permanently needs an external downloader.

Step-by-step: download a YouTube Short with DropZap

  1. Copy the Short URL. In the YouTube app, tap the Share arrow below the Short → Copy Link. URLs look like youtube.com/shorts/abc123.... Regular youtu.be/... short-links also work.
  2. Open DropZap's YouTube tool. Go to dropzap.digital. YouTube Shorts paste into the main video field just like regular YouTube videos.
  3. Pick resolution and Download. Shorts are typically available in 720p and 1080p vertical (9:16). Tap your preferred quality. The MP4 downloads in 3-5 seconds.

iPhone: save a Short directly to Camera Roll

After the download completes in Safari, the MP4 goes to Files app → On My iPhone → Downloads. To move it to your Camera Roll so it shows up in Photos and AirDrop:

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Navigate to On My iPhone → Downloads
  3. Long-press the downloaded MP4 → ShareSave Video

The Short now lives in Photos, playable offline, editable in iMovie, shareable via iMessage or AirDrop. Same flow used by our Instagram Reels iPhone guide — iOS treats both formats identically.

Android: saves to Gallery automatically

On Android, downloads from Chrome auto-appear in Google Photos or Samsung Gallery within a few seconds of completing. No extra move step needed. If you don't see it immediately, pull down to refresh the gallery or check the Downloads folder via your file manager.

Do Shorts download in full 1080p?

Yes, when the uploader posted at that resolution. YouTube stores Shorts in multiple resolutions — usually 480p, 720p, and 1080p. DropZap offers every available resolution; pick 1080p for the best quality. Note that if the uploader recorded on an older device, the source may only be 720p, in which case 1080p won't be listed.

Does DropZap work on age-restricted Shorts?

No. YouTube blocks unauthenticated access to age-restricted videos, which is why DropZap can't fetch them. Same for private and unlisted videos — these require the owner's login token.

Audio and music rights

Shorts often use trending music clips licensed to YouTube. Downloading the MP4 keeps the audio track as it was originally posted, but republishing that audio elsewhere may violate the music licensing terms. For personal offline viewing or editing, downloads are generally within fair-use scope — see our legal overview for country-specific notes.

For regular long-form YouTube videos, the same DropZap tool works identically. For bulk Shorts archiving from a creator's feed, use the bulk downloader guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download YouTube Shorts without the YouTube app?

Yes. Copy the Short URL from any share button, paste it into dropzap.digital, pick a resolution, and tap Download. No YouTube app, no login, no Premium subscription. Works on iPhone, Android, and PC.

Do YouTube Shorts download in 1080p?

Yes, if the uploader posted at 1080p. DropZap offers every available resolution — 480p, 720p, and 1080p are the most common for Shorts. Pick 1080p for the best quality.

Will downloaded Shorts have a watermark?

No. DropZap grabs the source MP4 from YouTube's CDN, which doesn't have a YouTube logo burned in. Anything the creator added (text overlays, captions, stickers) will still be there because those are part of the video itself.

Can I download age-restricted Shorts?

No. YouTube blocks unauthenticated access to age-restricted videos, which is why DropZap can't fetch them. The only legitimate way is YouTube's own in-app download on a verified account with YouTube Premium.
